Mud brick houses in Yazd taught me more than any textbook

I spent 3 days in Yazd last spring just walking around the old town, and the way those mud brick buildings are still standing after 700 years kind of blew my mind. They use these little wooden pegs between layers to lock the walls together, no nails or mortar like we think of it today. The local guide said they reapply a mud plaster coat every 2 years before the rainy season, which is why the facades look so fresh. What caught me was how the qanat water channels run underneath the streets, keeping the ground cool and the bricks from cracking. Has anyone else visited a site where the preservation trick was simpler than you expected? I'm curious if other desert cities have the same approach or if Yazd is unique.

Oh man, that sounds incredible. I love how the answer to keeping a 700 year old city alive is just... mud and water and good planning. It makes you realize how much we overcomplicate things sometimes.
