Rant: Used a $10 trowel from the hardware store on a dig in Colorado and it bent after 3 holes. Switched to a proper archaeology trowel and the difference was night and day.

Those cheap trowels actually work perfectly fine for most weekend projects. The stamped metal holds up just as well as forged ones for spreading mortar on a few paver stones or doing a small brick repair. Plus they weigh less so your wrist doesn't get as tired after an hour of work. For the 5 bucks they cost you can replace it every couple years and still come out ahead.
