A guy at my Tuesday chess club in Reno called my opening 'polite' and it ruined me for a week
So I play chess at this cafe in Reno every Tuesday, and I always open with the same boring setup because it feels safe. About 3 weeks ago this older guy named Walt beats me in like 18 moves and then just goes 'your opening is polite, it waits for permission.' I laughed it off but then I couldn't stop thinking about it. Every game after that I kept hearing it in my head and playing even safer, and I lost 9 of my next 12 games. So I looked up some aggressive openings and tried a gambit, and honestly I lost a bunch at first but now I actually win more than I did before. It was wild how one random comment from a stranger flipped how I play. Has anyone else gotten a one liner from somebody that messed with their head for weeks?
