Overheard a guy at the hardware store say he never uses a level for hanging shelves

I was picking up paint samples and this older dude was telling the cashier he just eyeballs everything. Said he's been hanging shelves for 30 years and levels are a crutch. It made me think about how many times I've double checked my work with a tool and still got it wrong. Has anyone else ever tried going totally by eye for something like that?

Haven't tried it myself, but a buddy of mine decided to hang his new TV all by eye. He ended up with the TV tilted like it was gonna slide off the wall, and the shelf below it was so crooked a glass almost rolled right off. Took him three hours and a lot of swearing to fix it with a level after that.
