A guy at the Grand Rapids astronomy club said my Andromeda shots looked like "mush," and he was right
I had been stacking 40 light frames at ISO 6400 from my driveway near the city and wondering why the core was always a fuzzy blob. He asked one question about my histogram and pointed out I was clipping the blacks before stacking, so I dropped to ISO 1600, took 120 shorter subs, and started checking the peak sat around a third of the way up. Two weeks later the dust lanes actually showed up in the final image. What is your go to ISO when shooting galaxies from a light polluted spot?
What kind of light pollution are you dealing with exactly, Bortle 6 or 7? Wondering because I'm stuck around Bortle 8 and even at ISO 1600 with 120 subs the gradient from the city glow keeps eating my dust lanes. Curious how you handle that part too, flats and background extraction or something else? Dropping ISO made sense for your blacks but I'm guessing the noise floor was never your real problem in the first place.
