Dropped $600 on a backyard telescope, turned out to be a glorified paperweight

Bought a fancy 8-inch reflector after reading all the hype about deep sky views, but light pollution in my Atlanta suburb made everything look like a gray smudge, so unless you're driving 2 hours to dark skies, save your cash and find a local astronomy club with loaner scopes first, has anyone else gotten burned by city viewing?
