An old mechanic in Fresno showed me how to listen to a car before touching a tool
Back when I first started turning wrenches, a guy named Ray at a little garage off Blackstone in Fresno made me stand next to a customer's car for a full minute before I could even open the hood. I was 19 and itching to grab a scan tool, but he just kept saying "shut up and listen" while the engine ticked and hummed. Turns out the noise changed pitch every time the AC kicked on, which pointed us right to a bad pulley bearing nobody else had caught. That one minute saved the customer two trips and about $300 in guesswork parts. Do any of you still do the stand-and-listen thing first, or has the scan tool pretty much replaced it for you?
