Been using the wrong size socket for my impact wrench for like a year

I was working on a stubborn axle nut on a Ford pickup yesterday, and my impact just kept hammering without moving it. My buddy walks over, looks at my setup, and just says 'dude, you're using a 3/8 adapter on a 1/2 inch gun, you're losing all your torque.' I felt so dumb. I'd been blaming the tool or the fastener this whole time. Anyone else ever do something simple like that for way too long?
