Cracked flexplate on a 2003 F-150 taught me to listen first

Had a customer in Tulsa bring in a truck with a noise that sounded like a loose heat shield, so I quoted an hour of labor to hunt it down. Turned out the flexplate was cracked at the bolt holes, and the only clue was a faint ticking at idle that got worse in gear. Anyone else had a noise that pointed one direction but the real problem was somewhere completely different?
