Just had a customer in Phoenix argue with me about a $120 diagnostic fee

Last week, this guy brought in his F-150 with a check engine light and got mad when I told him the fee was for my time and scanner, not just a guess. He said his nephew with a code reader could do it for free, so I showed him the live data stream and a pending code for a failing VVT solenoid he would have missed. How do you guys explain the value of a proper diagnosis to people who think it's just reading a number?

My buddy's scanner once flagged a dollar bill as fake (it was just really old and worn out). He got all excited for a second thinking he'd found a collector's item.
