Two shops in my town, two totally different ways of doing oil changes, which one is right?
I was at the Jiffy Lube on 5th street here in Boise last week waiting on my truck and watched a tech pull a drain plug without ever grabbing a torque wrench. My regular guy at the independent shop down the road says he never lets a car leave without torquing to spec, even if it takes him an extra 10 minutes per job. So which is it, are the quick lube guys cutting corners or is my old school mechanic just being picky?
Man, come on. It's a drain plug, not a head bolt. Half these guys have been turning wrenches for 20 years and nobody's engine has ever fallen out on the highway. @kai_nguyen acts like finding a torque wrench at a quick lube is the whole point, but the truth is most drain plugs have a crush washer and you can feel when it's snug. Yeah, a gorilla with an impact gun can strip the pan, that happens. But your old school guy torquing every plug to spec is nice and all, it just doesn't mean the quick lube is wrecking cars. Millions of oil changes a year and you don't hear about drain plugs flying off left and right. Sounds more like one guy is careful and the other guy is fast, and both of them get you down the road.
