I thought paying extra for open transport was a waste, then a dispatcher in Denver changed my mind
Last month I shipped my car from Denver to Phoenix and I almost went with the cheapest open carrier quote. A dispatcher named Mike told me to spend the extra $180 for a top-load spot. I figured he was just upselling me. He said the bottom rows catch all the road grit and rock chips from the trucks above. My car arrived with zero new chips on the hood and a clean front end. A friend shipped his the same route in a bottom spot and had 4 chips to fix. Has anyone else paid more for a top spot and felt it was worth it?
Seems like a lot of money to fix a problem that might not even be real. Road grit from trucks above? If that was such a big deal, every car carrier would be full of damaged cars and insurance companies would be all over it. One friend with 4 chips on the same route is just one story, could be bad luck or he hit some gravel on his own drive. Your car came in clean, sure, but maybe it would have been clean anyway. For $180 I'd want more than a maybe. Save that cash and put it toward a clear bra or just keep a chip pen handy.
