Had an old timer grab my arm at the hangar door back in 2019

He pointed at a frayed wire on a Cessna 172 and said 'son, that's not a bad crimp, that's a lawsuit waiting to happen,' and then walked me through his whole inspection routine for 20 minutes, so how do you get the new guys to slow down on their walkarounds?

You know, back in 2018 I had a student pilot who spent 45 minutes staring at the fuel sump drain on a Warrior, convinced it was leaking. Turned out he just had a drop of rain water on his finger. But you know who actually taught me how to slow down? My old man and his 1987 Ford pickup. He'd spend 20 minutes just checking the oil and belts before a trip, and he'd say "the car will let you know if you're in a hurry, but it won't tell you when you missed something." Your mileage may vary, but I find having the new guys tell me what they think they'll find before they start the walkaround helps them actually look instead of just going through the motions.
