Can we talk about how everyone plans the first day of a thru hike way too long
I keep seeing route plans where day one is 15 or 18 miles out of the gate, and I think that is a mistake almost every time. Last June I started the Long Trail at the southern end in Williamstown and pushed 16 miles on day one because the plan said so, and by 4pm my shoulders were shot and I was setting up camp in the dark. The pack always weighs more than you think that first day, your body is not used to the load yet, and the trail does not care about your spreadsheet. Now I cap day one at 8 miles no matter how good I feel, and I want to hear if anyone else does this or if I am just slow.
