Got snowed on for 3 days straight on the Salkantay trek

My group booked it in early May thinking we'd beat the rain, instead we got a whiteout at 4,600m near Abra Salkantay and had to bail to Santa Teresa a day early. Guide said it was the worst stretch he'd seen in 6 seasons, anyone else run into surprise snow on this route or should I just stop trusting May?

We bailed off the Inca Trail in 2016 with hail the size of golf balls at Dead Woman's Pass, so I feel your pain. Snow on the Salkantay in May is rare but it happens, the weather up there just does whatever it wants. Our guide said the same thing, worst freak storm he'd seen in a decade, so it's not like you picked a bad month on purpose. Honestly, you made the right call turning back early, that pass is no joke when it's whiteed out.
