Hot take: That GPS route my buddy swore by nearly got me stranded in the Sierra

My friend Mark told me he had a "secret" shortcut off the JMT near Rae Lakes. Said he'd done it three times and it cut 6 miles off the day. I followed his track, ended up on a cliff band above 11,000 feet with no water source. Took me 4 hours to backtrack. Who do you trust more for route beta, experienced friends or official trail data?

Oh man, I've been there so many times it hurts. My rule now is simple: if a buddy says a route is a "secret" or "cuts miles," I look at it on a topo map from three different angles before even thinking about trusting it. Friends usually mean well, but they forget to mention the 800 feet of bushwhacking or the dry creek bed you get pinned on. Official data won't save your ass if a trail is washed out either, so I always check recent trip reports on sites like CalTopo or AllTrails from the past couple of weeks. Best bet is to use a friend's beta but treat it like a rumor until you verify it with satellite imagery and a water source check.

Used to be all about trusting the buddy system since they've seen it firsthand, but getting cliffed out at 11k with no water changes things real quick. Now I take their beta as a starting point and double check it against recent trip reports at a minimum. Sat images are a must before I commit to any off-trail move now, learned that one the hard way lmao.
