My neighbor saw a bird and called it a 'fancy pigeon'

I was in my yard in Portland last month, trying to ID a hawk perched on my fence. My neighbor leaned over and said, 'Oh, that's just a fancy pigeon.' It was a Cooper's hawk, clear as day. I had to explain the difference while it stared right at us. Has anyone else had a totally wild bird ID from a well-meaning friend?

Fancy pigeon" is amazing. My aunt once called a pileated woodpecker a "big weird chicken." Like, how do you even get there?

How do people mix up birds that look so different? A Cooper's hawk is nothing like a pigeon, fancy or not. I get what @davis.dylan is saying though, because "big weird chicken" is almost as strange. Some folks just see a bird and their brain picks the closest normal animal. It's kind of funny once you get past the shock.
