My neighbor saw a bird and called it a 'fancy pigeon'

I was in my yard in Portland last month, trying to ID a hawk perched on my fence. My neighbor leaned over and said, 'Oh, that's just a fancy pigeon.' It was a Cooper's hawk, clear as day. I had to explain the difference while it stared right at us. Has anyone else had a totally wild bird ID from a well-meaning friend?

Finally gave up on the old putty knife for window glazing and switched to a 6-inch taping knife

I had this stubborn old window in my 1920s house that needed the glass re-sealed. For years, I used the same 1.5-inch putty knife my dad gave me, and it was always a fight to get a smooth bead. Last weekend, I grabbed a wider 6-inch taping knife from my work truck on a whim. The difference was HUGE. The bigger blade held more putty and let me press it into the corner in one long, even pull instead of a bunch of little choppy strokes. It took me three tries with the small knife to get a seal I was okay with, but with the wider one, I got it perfect on the first go. The finish is so much cleaner and looks way more professional. I can't believe I waited this long to try it. Has anyone else found a simple tool swap that made a frustrating job way easier?

Just got back from the Grand Canyon and the way people talk about the rock layers is totally wrong

I was at the South Rim last week, and every tour guide and sign just calls it 'the red rock' or 'the Kaibab limestone'. That's it. But standing there, you can see at least a dozen distinct bands, each with a different texture and color. The Coconino sandstone isn't just white, it's got these wild cross-bedded patterns from ancient sand dunes. The Bright Angel Shale is this greenish mudstone that crumbles if you touch it. Everyone focuses on how old it is, but they miss how you can read the whole environmental history from a desert to a sea just by looking at the stack. It's not one big hole, it's a library. Has anyone else felt like the basic tourist info strips all the cool detail out of the story?

My car died in the rain outside a small town diner in Ohio

It was pouring and my old truck just quit on the highway. I got it to the shoulder and walked a mile to this little place called Dot's. I was soaked and mad. The waitress, Dot herself, gave me a free coffee and let me use her phone. Her husband came out after his shift and gave my battery a jump with his own truck. Anyone ever had a stranger help them out like that when you were really stuck?
