My war with a single squirrel over one suet feeder lasted 11 days
So I hung a suet feeder on a shepherd's hook about 8 feet from my kitchen window back on the 3rd, and this one gray squirrel figured out how to shimmy down the pole and hang upside down like a tiny acrobat. I tried greasing the pole with vegetable oil, which worked for about 4 hours until it just wiped its paws on the grass and came back. Then I moved the whole setup to a branch 6 feet off the ground thinking that was too high, but it made a flying leap from my neighbor's fence and nailed it on the first try. Finally my wife said just buy the baffle, and the $22 cone thing from the hardware store ended the standoff in one afternoon. Anyone else got a squirrel that seems way smarter than it should be, or is it just mine?
Squirrels can remember how to beat a puzzle for up to two years, which my brother told me after he read some study on it. That's why greasing the pole only buys you a few hours, the thing just waits for the oil to wear off and tries again. A baffle really is the only thing that works long term, so your wife was right on that one.
