Pro tip: the squirrel proof feeder was never squirrel proof, it was me proof
Bought one of those weighted perch feeders back in April for $45 because the gray squirrels out at my place near Spokane were cleaning me out daily. For 3 weeks it worked great, then I watched a squirrel hang off the top bracket by its back feet and reach down past the perch to grab sunflower seeds without tripping the weight. I stood at my kitchen window yelling at this animal like it owed me money. What finally clicked is that the feeder was fine, the problem was where I hung it. It was 4 feet from my fence, so they just launched off the rail. I moved the whole pole setup 10 feet out into open lawn with a baffle on it and the raids basically stopped. The birds took a bit to find it again, but the cardinals and chickadees figured it out within a day. Anyone else solve a feeder problem by moving it instead of buying a new one?
