Put out a single suet cake in February and got a woodpecker I'd never seen in 9 years here
I hung one plain suet cake from Ace Hardware on my maple in Cleveland Heights back in February, mostly just to help the chickadees get through the cold. About a week later a yellow bellied sapsucker showed up and worked that thing for 20 minutes straight. I've been feeding birds in this same yard since 2015 and never once saw one here. Was it just a hungry migrant passing through, or are sapsuckers actually expanding their range into northeast Ohio?
