PSA: dropped $140 on a fancy pergola bracket kit and it was a total waste

I bought one of those no-weld steel bracket kits for the 12x14 pergola I put up last month, thinking it would save me a weekend of cutting and drilling. The plates bent on the first try and two of the pre-drilled holes didn't line up, so I ended up going to the hardware store anyway and building my own from 2x6 scraps for about $30. Has anyone found a bracket setup that actually holds up, or is bolting it together by hand just the way to go?
