Fell for a $45 'professional' knife sharpening kit that did nothing

I bought this fancy sharpening kit from an online ad three weeks ago thinking I'd finally get my chef's knife razor sharp. Tried it on my dull German blade and it actually made the edge worse somehow. Has anyone else gotten burned by those all-in-one sharpening systems?

I used that same kit on my Wusthof chef knife last week and it ended up giving me the best edge I've ever had. The trick is you have to hold the blade at exactly 20 degrees and do the full 15 passes on each side. I messed up the first time like you did but after watching a YouTube video I realized I was going way too fast. The ceramic rod at the end is what really makes the difference if you use it right.
