My buddy dared me to watch Manos with subtitles off in his basement in Tucson, and now my bad movie nights are totally different
Two weeks ago my friend Dave hosted movie night at his place in Tucson and he made a rule that nobody could talk during the movie. It was my turn to pick, so I brought Manos: The Hands of Fate and figured the silence would ruin the fun, but honestly it was the opposite. Around the 40 minute mark, when Torgo does that weird walk, the room went dead quiet and then all 6 of us just lost it at the same time because nobody had said a word. That weird delayed laugh hit way harder than when we usually shout jokes over the whole thing, and I could actually hear lines I never caught before, like the cop saying they were in the middle of nowhere. We ended the night with a rule that we save all our jokes for the walk to the car, and the recap in the driveway was almost funnier than the movie. Tbh I don't think I can go back to the old way of yelling the entire time. Has anyone else tried quiet viewing with bad movies, or do you all keep the commentary running?
That 40 minute mark timing is real, Torgo's walk is the biggest laugh in the whole movie and it only works if everyone's been sitting in silence waiting for it. My crew tried the quiet thing once with The Room and by the time Tommy Wiseau said "oh hi Mark" we were all holding our breath. The driveway recap is the real gem though, we started doing that too and the jokes get way better when you've had an hour to let them cook. Ngl the shouting thing gets old fast, it turns into six people fighting to be the funniest one in the room instead of actually watching.
