My buddy paused Birdemic right at the coat hanger scene to microwave nachos, and the DVD froze

We were 40 minutes into our Friday night marathon in my garage when he hit pause on the worst possible frame, and the player locked up on that same shot for 20 minutes while we ate. Now I always do a test grab of the disc before anyone comes over, does anyone else have a player that hates pausing, or is it just my $30 thrift store DVD deck?
