My mom told me my pie crust was tough as a brick, so I stopped overworking the dough and started using ice water

She said it right after Thanksgiving dinner last year, and I switched to handling the dough as little as possible with a pastry cutter, has anyone else had someone's blunt feedback actually fix their baking?

Right? I had a similar thing with my pie crusts too. My aunt Martha just looked at me one time and said "tastes like cardboard" and I was SO embarrassed but she was totally right. @anna_carter53 yeah overmixing is the devil I swear. I started using ice cold butter and barely touching it and now my crusts actually flake. It's weird how the most BRUTAL feedback ends up being the best advice. I still think about that moment every time I roll out dough.

Oh man, yes! My grandma told me my biscuits were like hockey pucks and I was so mad but she was totally right about not overmixing. Now I barely touch the dough and they actually puff up nice.
