Funny how those mechanical issues can fly under the radar. The PCM is looking for electrical faults in the circuits, not necessarily if a bolt came a little loose. Seen similar stuff on older gas engines where a worn rocker pivot would cause a misfire that the computer just couldn't pin down.

Clear jars are a game changer for sure. You can actually see the whole structure of the starter, not just the top. It makes it way easier to judge when it's truly peaked and ready to use. My tall ones always made it look inactive even when it was going crazy down at the bottom.
