Read somewhere that the yeast actually works slower in higher altitudes because there's less air pressure or something... makes sense it'd mess with a starter.

Totally agree on the duct tape trick, that stuff is magic for stuck threads... I've used it on a few old lenses that felt like they were welded together.

Oh man, I feel your pain! I had a stuck filter on a 50mm f/1.4 Takumar and tried the rubber band trick with zero luck. What finally did it for me was wrapping the ring with a thick strip of duct tape (sticky side out), then using a pair of channel locks gripping the tape. The tape gave me enough grip without scratching anything, and it came loose after one good twist.
