My stand mixer arm dropped mid-knead and I nearly lost a hand

I was making a double batch of sourdough last Tuesday when the hinge pin on my 20 year old KitchenAid just sheared off, dropping the whole head onto the dough hook while it was spinning. Suddenly the bowl was grinding metal and dough was flinging everywhere across my counter. Has anyone else had a mixer fail like this mid-recipe, or did I just push it past its limit with too much heavy dough?

Holy crap, the head just dropped mid-knead?! That's terrifying. I thought mine was bad when the speed control lever snapped off but at least the damn thing stayed shut. Did the dough hook punch a hole through your bowl or just scratch it up? I'd be sending angry emails to KitchenAid with pictures, that sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

A lawsuit waiting to happen"? Come on, those things are built like tanks and have a million safety features, yours probably just wasn't locked tight or you had too stiff a dough in there.
