Why does my cookie dough always spread into one giant sheet?

Seriously, every time I bake chocolate chip cookies they melt into one flat pan sized mess. I follow the recipe exactly and use cold butter. I even chilled the dough for an hour last time. They taste fine but look like a cookie catastrophe. What simple thing am I missing here?

Ugh, I had that exact problem forever. I was accidentally using melted butter instead of just softened. Switched to softened sticks and my cookies finally held their shape. Are you using the right butter?

Hey, besides @finleylopez's points, are you packing your flour too tight?

Honestly, the simple thing is probably too much sugar or your baking soda is dead. I had the same flat sheet issue for years. I was accidentally using an extra quarter cup of white sugar because my measuring cup was off. Try cutting the white sugar by two tablespoons and make sure your brown sugar is packed tight. Also, test your baking soda with a drop of vinegar. If it doesn't fizz right away, that's your whole problem. Fresh soda gives them the right lift instead of just melting out.
