Can we talk about how the dollar store tape aisle is a total lie?

I bought three rolls of "heavy duty" packing tape at the Dollar Tree in Fort Wayne last week and every single one peeled off a plain cardboard box within an hour, so now I want to know if anyone has found a cheap tape that actually sticks or if I should just accept the $4 name brand.

Tape sitting on a shelf for who knows how long loses its grip and the dollar store stock is probably older than you think. Heat and cold in those shipping containers do a number on the glue too. The real trick is the box itself, because plain cardboard has a waxy coating on some boxes that cheap tape just slides right off of. Try roughing up the seam with your thumb or a bit of sandpaper before you stick it down and even the cheap stuff holds way better.
