I finally tried a $3 bread machine from Goodwill and it burned every loaf for a week
Picked up a beat up Oster bread machine at a Goodwill in Tacoma for $3, figured worst case I toss it. First loaf came out like a brick with a burnt crust, second one same thing. I checked the paddle, the yeast, even the timer, but it kept overbaking on the edges while the middle stayed doughy. Turns out the heating element had a loose wire that only made contact sometimes, so heat came in uneven bursts. I could either replace a $15 part or just use it as a very loud paperweight. My debate is this: is a thrift store fixer worth the time and parts, or should a deal that cheap just be a throwaway experiment? Has anyone else nursed a discount appliance back to life and actually kept using it for real?
