I was running a new suction dredge on a channel job last year, and this retired operator named Walt was watching from the dock. He came over after my shift and said, 'Kid, you're staring at your pressure gauge like it's a TV... but that muddy brown plume behind you? It's too thin. You're leaving good material on the bottom.' He was right. I slowed the cutterhead by about 15 rpm and the load thickened up right away. Anyone else have a simple tip that changed how you run a machine?

Just realized my cousin's 'proof' about the moon landing was a mislabeled photo from a car show

We were at a family cookout in Akron last summer, and he pulled up a photo on his phone that he said showed a stage light in the 'moon' sky. He was so sure it was from a NASA archive. I looked closer and saw a tiny banner in the corner that said 'Canton Classic Car Show, 2019'. I pointed it out, and he just shrugged and said, 'Well, they could have faked that too.' It was a weird mix of funny and sad. Has anyone else had a moment where the 'evidence' presented was just clearly something else?

My emergency fund saved me from a $900 car repair last month

The transmission in my old Civic started making a grinding noise on my way home from a cleaning job. I took it to a shop in Tacoma and they said the repair would be $900. I had to pay it right then to get my car back. That money came straight from the emergency fund I started putting $50 into every paycheck two years ago. It felt bad to see the balance drop, but I didn't have to put it on a credit card. Has anyone else had to use their emergency fund for something that wasn't a job loss?

Bought a $300 budgeting app and I'm not sure it was worth it

I got the YNAB app last year after seeing so many people talk about it. It took me a full weekend to set up all my accounts and get the hang of the system. On one hand, it did help me see where my money was going and I saved about $50 a month on random spending. On the other, it feels like a lot of work to keep up with, and I'm not sure the cost is justified over a free spreadsheet. Has anyone else tried a paid budgeting tool and stuck with it long term?
