Blew up a derailleur hanger on a group ride in Boulder, fixed it trailside

Was hammering down the descent on Flagstaff Road last Saturday when my chain dropped and the derailleur wrapped itself around the spokes. Snapped the hanger clean off and bent the cage so bad the jockey wheels were touching. Had to walk two miles to the car, then hit the shop for a new hanger and spent an hour straightening the cage with a crescent wrench and a bench vise. Anyone else carry spare hangers for their specific frame, or do you just gamble and hope the local shop has one in stock?

Ugh, that sucks man. Bent cages are the worst, and walking out two miles after a good descent is a total buzzkill. I learned that lesson the hard way on a trip to Moab, so now I always keep a spare hanger in my saddle bag, even if it means my pump has to ride in a jersey pocket. It's a pain in the ass, but way less of a pain than hoping a shop has the right one for an older frame.
