I finally tried waxing chains instead of oil, and my drivetrain noise gave me a surprise
I run a small repair stand out of my garage in Tucson and decided to test paraffin wax on my own commuter instead of the usual drip lube. After about 300 miles the chain was dead quiet and my cassette teeth looked way cleaner than they ever did with oil. I figured wax was just hype from the racing crowd, but the grit buildup on my jockey wheels was almost gone. Anyone else running wax on bikes that see monsoon season and actual dirt, or am I setting myself up for trouble?
The part about the grit buildup on your jockey wheels almost being gone is what got me. You mean to tell me wax actually keeps that black gunk from caking up in there? I have spent way too many evenings scraping that stuff off with a pick and a rag. I ride in dusty stuff too, not monsoon level, but plenty of grit, and oil just turns into grinding paste out here. If wax holds up in real dirt and not just clean road miles, that changes things for me.
