PSA: A customer's simple question about his chain made me stop and think.

An older guy came into the shop yesterday with a worn-out 9-speed chain. He asked, 'Is this really all that's holding me to the road?' I gave my usual spiel about wear and safety, but he just said, 'I trust you to keep it that way.' It wasn't about the part, it was about the trust in the work. Made me slow down and double-check every link on his new one. Do you ever get those moments that just reset your focus for the day?

Used to see a chain as just a part to swap out, a ten minute job. That changed when a regular handed me his bike before a big tour and said "my vacation is in your hands, man." Felt the weight of that. Now I picture someone's kid on the back of every bike I work on. Makes my hands slow down and my eyes check everything twice.

Yeah, that kind of trust makes you really look at your hands.
