Vent: kids greasing headset bearings like they're packing a wheel hub
Watched a guy at the co-op in Sacramento pump half a tube of marine grease into a cartridge headset last Saturday and it oozed out the top cap for an hour, you only need a thin film on the races, so is this a YouTube thing now or did I just miss the memo?
Thin film is right for the races but the cartridge bearings themselves are sealed, so all that extra grease just pushes past the seals and makes a mess. Problem is half the videos out there show people packing them like wheel hubs because it looks satisfying on camera, and nobody mentions that too much grease can actually drag on the bearing and trap grit. A light coat on the races and a tiny bit on the seal lip is plenty, anything more is just cleanup work later.
