Fender advice from a messenger in Seattle saved my rain commute

A courier I met at a red light on 4th Ave told me to skip the cheap clip-ons and get proper full-length fenders, even if it cost more. Three months of daily drizzle later, my back is dry and my drivetrain isn't grinding. Anyone else get a random stranger tip that actually worked out?
