My coworker Linda finally convinced me to try fenders after 3 years of commuting

I always thought fenders looked dorky and just added weight, but last week after getting soaked on my 7 mile ride to work in Seattle, she showed me how much cleaner her bike stayed. She said 'your back is always covered in that stripe of road grime, just get some SKS raceblades.' I finally caved and ordered a set for $35. Anyone else been stubborn about a simple upgrade that actually makes a huge difference?

Does your commute have any bike path sections that are shared with pedestrians or dogs? I was in the same boat for years, totally against fenders until I realized how much spray I was kicking up onto people walking their dogs on the Burke Gilman. It felt bad when someone yelled at me after I splashed them on a rainy day. That was the moment I realized fenders aren't just about keeping you dry, they're about being a decent person to share the trail with. I got the raceblades too and honestly the weight difference is barely noticable compared to the peace of mind. Plus your bike looks way more complete without that stripe of mud up your back.
