PSA: Found out only 1 in 5 bike commuters in my city use lights at night, and I saw the stat at a bike shop on 4th
I was at City Cycle on 4th last week getting a new chain, and the owner showed me a city survey from 2022 that said only 19% of people riding after dark have a front and rear light. That number blew my mind because I ride the same route every night and I swear I see way more than that with lights. So now I'm stuck: do we need stricter laws and tickets to force lights, or is it smarter to just hand out free cheap lights at busy intersections? I get why people skip lights (cost, forgetting, or thinking they're fine), but I almost got hit by a guy in a black hoodie with no reflectors last Tuesday. What would actually get more people lit up, fines or free lights?
