Serious question, ever had your grocery bag fail mid ride?

Was biking home with a full rack bag last night, the cheap strap gave out right at a light. My eggs and a loaf of bread went everywhere, got lucky nothing broke completely. I think I need a better system for hauling food, maybe a crate or sturdier panniers. What do you all use to get your groceries home safe?

Switched to a set of basic panniers years ago after a similar disaster. They hook onto the rack itself so there's no strap to snap at a bad time. The main downside is things can slide around inside if you're not careful, so I keep a spare tote bag in there to pack stuff into. Still way more reliable than trying to tie anything down with bungees or hoping a single strap holds. Just watch your balance when you load them up.

Nah, bungees work fine for me...

Oh man, that mental image is just PERFECT. The slow-motion tumble of the bread, the sheer panic for the eggs... classic. Sounds like your grocery bag staged a protest right at the worst possible moment. Honestly, after something like that, upgrading to a crate or real panniers isn't just smart, it's basic self-defense against future food betrayal. Bungees and flimsy straps are just asking for a second act of that tragedy.
