Why does nobody talk about how quiet the bike path gets at 6am in Portland
I rode the Springwater Corridor here in Portland last Tuesday at 6am and counted maybe 4 other people the whole 8 miles. What got me was how different it feels, no dodging dog walkers or tourists, just me and the herons by the river. I started shifting my whole schedule 30 minutes earlier just for that stretch of empty path. It made me wonder if most commuters are fighting the 8am crunch for no reason. Does anyone else ride stupid early just to get the quiet, or am I the weird one?
Those early hours are genuinely the best kept secret of bike commuting, and once you start you never go back to fighting the crowds. Just grab a decent light setup (front and rear, both flashing) since visibility is the one real tradeoff at that hour.
