I finally quit quenching in used motor oil after what the old timer at the flea market in Abilene showed me
I used to quench everything in whatever dirty oil was in the bucket, figured it did not matter much. Then a guy at the flea market in Abilene watched me pull a hot blade and said my oil was too thick with sludge and it was slowing my quench down. He had me strain it through a paint filter and the scale on my next 3 knives came off way cleaner. Took me 10 minutes and a $3 filter. Anyone else run into oil getting too nasty and how often do you swap it out?
Straining it helps the scale come off cleaner but I don't buy that sludge slows the quench much. Thick gunk on top just means less oil is moving, and a hot blade needs fast oil right at the steel. I've run black oil for months and my 1084 came out fine.
