I switched my anvil face prep and now my welds look different

For 5 years I dressed my anvil faces with a flap disc every month like everyone in the shop told me to. Then I stopped doing it for 3 months straight and just used a worn down stone instead. The hammer bounce changed completely, my pieces stopped showing those shiny cold spots near the edges. People swear by smooth faces but rough texture honestly gave me better control on leaf work. Has anyone else dropped the polishing routine and seen a difference in their upsetting?
