Showerthought: I wasted $150 on a 'bargain' anvil that was just a big hunk of cast iron
I bought it off a farm auction site because the price seemed right, but it rings like a dead bell and dents under anything heavier than a ball-peen hammer, so what should I look for in a proper used anvil that won't ruin my work?

Yeah, Julia's right about "bargain" being a red flag.

Ever notice how the word "bargain" is just a warning in disguise? That farm auction site probably knew it was a decorative paperweight. For a real anvil, you need forged steel with a hardened face, not cheap cast iron that cracks.
