Hand-stitched buttonholes looked dumb until I did one myself
Tbh I always thought those fancy hand-stitched buttonholes on vintage jackets were just snobbery. Then I tried doing one on a thrifted 1960s blazer I was fixing up, took me 2 hours with a 3mm stitch gauge and I finally get why they hold up so much better than machine ones. Has anyone else had a skill click like that after actually trying it once?
That click moment happens because your hands learn what a machine hides. Machine buttonholes just punch through and hope the fabric holds, but your fingers feel every fiber when you pull the thread tight. Same thing happened to me with saddle stitching leather, thought it was slow and pointless until the first bag I made held up for years while my machine-sewn stuff fell apart.
