My EDC rotation logic was flipped for years, a pawn shop busted my ego

I always carried my most expensive custom knife daily, figured it deserved the pocket time and the cheaper ones could sit in the safe. Last month I'm in a pawn shop in Reno, and the old guy behind the counter sees my knife and says 'you're carrying that one like it's a tool, but you treat it like a museum piece.' He was right, I'd been babying it, never using it on boxes or rope, just flipping it open to show people. Meanwhile my $40 beater got all the real work, scrapes and patina, and honestly it's the one I trust blindfolded. The expensive one stayed pristine but useless, like a sports jacket that never leaves the closet because you're scared of a stain. Now I carry the beater and keep the fancy one for dress-up days, and I've used it maybe twice. Anyone else realize they had their whole carry hierarchy on the wrong priority for years?

Wondering if you actually miss the knife when you don't carry it, or if you just miss the idea of being the guy with the fancy one? Cause those feel like two very different things to me.
