My uncle in Portland said never buy a knife with a hollow grind, now I'm second guessing him
He's been collecting vintage slip joints for 30 years and told me hollow grinds chip too easy on harder tasks. So I passed on a $65 Case at a flea market last month and bought a flat grind instead. Then I used my buddy's hollow grind to cut some thick leather and it sliced like butter with no chips. Now I'm wondering if his rule only applies to certain steels or if he's just stuck in his ways. Anyone else have a hard and fast rule from an old timer that didn't hold up?
My grandpa swore up and down that carbon steel rusts if you look at it wrong, then I left my 1095 in the rain all weekend and it came back with one tiny spot. Old timers got their rules from ONE bad experience and never let it go.
