My aunt's weird 'add a pinch of sugar to the tomato sauce' trick actually works, which I confirmed after my sauce tasted too sharp three times in a row.

My grandma always told me to add a tiny bit of baking soda if my tomato sauce was too acidic. Ngl, I thought she was nuts until I tried it. It just takes the sharp edge right off without making it sweet.

Overheard a couple at the airport in Lisbon talking about their 3-week trip for under $800

Wait, so they spent less on three weeks than I do on my monthly car payment? How is that even possible without just eating plain bread the whole time? I guess if you're willing to give up a central location and fancy dinners, you can stretch your money a lot further. But doesn't spending all that time on buses and cooking in a hostel kitchen start to feel like a second job? I admire the hustle, but I'd probably get tired of it after the first week.

Saw a coffee shop in Portland using a smart plug for their window sign

Seems like a lot of tech just to avoid flipping a switch.

Remembering an old mason in Cincinnati who told me 'A good line is worth a thousand bricks' when I was rushing a foundation.

My dad tried to teach me that. I once cut a shelf board three inches too short because I was rushing. Had to explain to @ward.mason why his new bookcase had a big gap. That extra five seconds to measure again would have saved me a whole afternoon.

Had a chat with a retired architect at the coffee shop that changed how I think about layers

That retired architect nailed something I see everywhere now. My dad sorts his garage tools by job, like "car repair" or "yard work," not just "wrenches" or "saws." It's the same idea. We default to listing things, but grouping them by their purpose changes how you solve problems. Your switch from "Walls" to "Structure" proves it. It stops being a pile of parts and starts being a real building in your mind.
