My uncle's advice about blade steel was backwards, and I learned it the hard way
My uncle swore by old carbon steel knives and told me to avoid anything stainless for everyday carry. For two years I listened, and every knife I carried rusted in my pocket after a sweaty day at work in Phoenix. Last spring I finally bought a cheap stainless blade, a $40 Sandvik steel model, just to prove him wrong. Turns out he was right about edge retention but dead wrong about maintenance for a working man's knife. The stainless one has been in my pocket for 14 months now, no rust spots, and it still shaves hair off my arm. Has anyone else been given confidently wrong advice from a relative about heat treating or blade coatings?
