That $150 leather dye job wrecked my 70s blazer lining

I bought a vintage herringbone jacket at an estate sale in Dayton last month and figured I'd dye the faded shoulders myself with a kit from the fabric store. The leather elbow patches bled into the wool and the liner turned into this sticky purple mess that ruined the whole piece. Anyone else had a restoration project go sideways and end up losing more cash than the jacket was worth?
